Prometheus Plays Tug Of War With One Of Saturn's Rings
Pasadena CA (SPX) Nov 26, 2009
The diminutive moon Prometheus whips gossamer ice particles out of Saturn's F ring in this image taken by the Cassini spacecraft on Aug. 21, 2009. The moon and the ring have eccentric, offset orbits, so Prometheus dips in and out of the F ring as it travels around Saturn. Its gravitational force drags the dust-sized particles at the edge of the F ring along for the ride. ... read more

Partial Gravity And The Moon
Sydney, Australia (SPX) Nov 25, 2009
We've studied the human body in weightlessness for decades, and we now have a fairly good understanding of how it affects us. It's important to know this. Weightlessness, or microgravity, can seriously influence the health and performance of astronauts. One thing we don't properly understand, though, is the influence of partial gravity on the human ... more

Astronomy Question Of The Week: What Happens On The Moon During A Lunar Eclipse
Bonn, Germany (SPX) Nov 24, 2009
Nowadays, solar eclipses are seen as a fascinating natural phenomenon. In earlier times, people viewed them instead as something threatening, since the Sun provides us with light and heat, without which life on Earth could not flourish. However, the cause of solar eclipses is now generally known: On its orbit around the Earth, the Moon passes between Earth and Sun, causing darkness lasting ... more

New Moon Sets Stage For Brilliant Leonids Meteor Shower
Greenbelt MD (SPX) Nov 16, 2009
This year's Leonids meteor shower peaks on Tuesday, Nov. 17. If forecasters are correct, the shower should produce a mild but pretty sprinkling of meteors over North America followed by a more intense outburst over Asia. The phase of the moon will be new - setting the stage for what could be one of the best Leonid showers in years. "We're predicting 20 to 30 meteors per hour over the ... more

    Radiation: The Moon's Greatest Menace
Sydney, Australia (SPX) Nov 12, 2009
The Moon is a harsh place, as decades of direct exploration have demonstrated. It carries all of the risks of conventional spaceflight, then adds to them. The tyranny of distance from Earth makes emergency returns difficult. The dust on the surface could be dangerous to inhale. Meteorites pepper the surface. These are serious problems, but the greatest threat to future human explorers will ... more
