Cassini Data Show Enceladus In Motion
Pasadena CA (JPL) Jan 12, 2010
Blobs of warm ice that periodically rise to the surface and churn the icy crust on Saturn's moon Enceladus explain the quirky heat behavior and intriguing surface of the moon's south polar region, according to a new paper using data from NASA's Cassini spacecraft. "Cassini appears to have caught Enceladus in the middle of a burp," said Francis Nimmo, a planetary scientist at the University ... read more

Lava tube could house moon colony
Tokyo (UPI) Jan 2, 2009
A deep lava tube discovered on the moon could shield human colonists from harsh temperatures and meteorites, Japanese scientists said. The tube, in the Marius Hills on the moon's near side, is believed to be 213-feet wide and more than 260-feet deep, said Junichi Haruyama, a researcher with the Japanese space agency JAXA. Blue Moon Rounds Out The Decade
Los Angeles (SPX) Dec 30, 2009
As twilight descends on New Year's Eve of 2009, a full Moon will rise in the eastern sky for the second time this month (the first time came on December 2nd). Many people use the expression "once in a blue Moon" to mean something that occurs rarely, and you might be tempted to call December 31st's full Moon a "Blue Moon" too. While the former meaning can be traced back centuries, the latter definition is much newer - and it's wrong! "In modern usage, the second full Moon in a month has come to be called a 'Blue Moon.' But it's not!" says Kelly Beatty, Senior Contributing Editor for Sky and Telescope magazine. "This colorful term is actually a calendrical goof that worked its way into the pages of Sky and Telescope back in March 1946, and it spread to the world from there." ... more

Washington DC (SPX) Dec 30, 2009
NASA has selected three proposals as candidates for the agency's next space venture to another celestial body in our solar system. The final project selected in mid-2011 may provide a better understanding of Earth's formation or perhaps the origin of life on our planet. The proposed missions would probe the atmosphere and crust of Venus; return a piece of a near-Earth asteroid for analysis; or ... more
