Cassini Shoots New Close-Ups Of Death Star-Like MoonPasadena CA (JPL) Feb 18, 2010 Blazing through its closest pass of the Saturnian moon Mimas on Feb. 13, Cassini sent back striking close-ups of the moon likened to the Death Star from "Star Wars" and the enormous crater scarring its surface. The flyby also yielded solid data on the moon's thermal signature and surface composition. Some of the raw, unprocessed images sent back from the flyby show the bright, steep slopes of the giant Herschel Crater, which measures about 140 kilometers (88 miles) wide. The icy slopes appear to b ... read more |

Studying Titan's Lakes On Earth
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Jan 29, 2010The recent discovery of lakes on Saturn's moon Titan make it the only other object in the solar system known to have liquid on its surface. However, dipping 179 degrees C (290 degrees F) below freezing, these lakes are definitely not filled with water. "The water is frozen so solid on Titan that you can liken it to silicate rocks on Earth," says Vincent Chevrier of the University of Arkans ... more India To Launch Chandrayaan-2 By 2013
Bangalore, India (PTI) Jan 29, 2010Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) chief K. Radhakrishnan on Wednesday said the configuration for the new moon mission 'Chandrayaan-2' is being finalized and added that it would be launched by 2013. Chandrayaan-2, which will be a joint effort between ISRO and Russia, will consist of a lander and a rover for a soft land on moon. Sydney, Australia (SPX) Jan 27, 2010In 2009, it was found that some polar regions of the Moon are the coldest places in the solar system. It's even colder there than distant, frozen Pluto! Some craters are permanently blocked from sunlight, and apparently lack sources of heat from underground. These areas aren't just cold at certain times. They never get warm at all. The Moon's cold traps have been celebrated for another rea ... more |
