NASA Launches Interactive Simulation Of Satellite Communications
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Mar 10, 2010
NASA has unveiled an interactive computer simulation that allows virtual explorers of all ages to dock the space shuttle at the International Space Station, experience a virtual trip to Mars or a lunar impact, and explore images of star formations taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. In an effort to excite young people about space and NASA's missions, the agency has launched the online Space Communication and Navigation (SCaN) simulation, designed to entertain and educate. The interactive simulati ... read more

Behold The Violent History Of Saturn's White Whale Moon
Pasadena CA (JPL) Feb 22, 2010
Like the battered white whale Moby Dick taunting Captain Ahab, Saturn's moon Prometheus surges toward the viewer in a 3-D image from NASA's Cassini spacecraft. The image exposes the irregular shape and circular surface scars on Prometheus, pointing to a violent history. These craters are probably the remnants from impacts long ago. Prometheus is one of Saturn's innermost moons. It or ... more

US lunar pull-out leaves China shooting for moon
Beijing (AFP) Feb 21, 2010
China aims to land its first astronauts on the moon within a decade at the dawn of a new era of manned space exploration - a race it now leads thanks to the US decision to drop its lunar programme. US President Barack Obama earlier this month said he planned to drop the costly Constellation space programme, a budget move that would kill off future moon exploration if it is approved by Congr ... more

Colony Of Humans On Moon Possible In Future
Thiruvananthapuram, India (PTI) Feb 19, 2010
With the discovery of water on the moon, there was a distinct possibility of humans setting up a colony in the nearest satellite from the Earth, former ISRO chairman G Madhavan Nair has said. The Chandrayaan-1 mission's finding that large quantities of water were present in the polar region of the moon opened up the possibility of splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen, Nair said at the ... more

Cassini Set To Do Retinal Scan Of Saturnian Eyeball
Pasadena CA (JPL) Feb 17, 2010
On Feb. 13, 2010, NASA's Cassini spacecraft will make its closest examination yet of Mimas, an eyeball-shaped moon of Saturn that has also been likened to the Death Star of "Star Wars." The spacecraft will be returning the highest-resolution images yet of this battered satellite. Mimas bears the mark of a violent, giant impact from the past - the 140-kilometer-wide (88-mile-wide) Herschel Crater - and scientists hope the encounter will help them explain why the moon was not blown to smithereens wh ... read more
