Craters Around Lunar Poles Could Be ElectrifiedGreenbelt MD (SPX) Apr 19, 2010 As the solar wind flows over natural obstructions on the moon, it may charge polar lunar craters to hundreds of volts, according to new calculations by NASA's Lunar Science Institute team. Polar lunar craters are of interest because of resources, including water ice, which exist there. The moon's orientation to the sun keeps the bottoms of polar craters in permanent shadow, allowing temperatures there to plunge below minus 400 degrees Fahrenheit, cold enough to store volatile material like water f ... read more |

Color Near Herschel Crater
Pasadena CA (JPL) Mar 30, 2010Subtle color differences on Saturn's moon Mimas are apparent in this false-color view of Herschel Crater captured by NASA's Cassini spacecraft during its closest-ever flyby of that moon. The image shows terrain-dependent color variations, particularly the contrast between the bluish materials in and around Herschel Crater (130 kilometers, or 80 miles, wide) and the greenish cast on older, ... more 1980s Video Icon Glows On Saturn Moon
Pasadena CA (JPL) Mar 30, 2010The highest-resolution-yet temperature map and images of Saturn's icy moon Mimas obtained by NASA's Cassini spacecraft reveal surprising patterns on the surface of the small moon, including unexpected hot regions that resemble "Pac-Man" eating a dot, and striking bands of light and dark in crater walls. "Other moons usually grab the spotlight, but it turns out Mimas is more bizarre than we ... more A Piece Of The Moon In Oberhausen
Cologne, Germany (SPX) Mar 29, 2010It takes some imagination - the new exhibit on display at the 'Out of this World - Wonders of the Solar System' exhibition at the Gasometer Oberhausen, does not look very spectacular at first glance. Lent to the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum fur Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) by NASA, it is grey in colour, small - weighing just 92.5 grams - and encased in a Plexiglas casting. But t ... more |

LRO Camera Releases Science Data From First Six MonthsTempe AZ (SPX) Mar 18, 2010 NASA is releasing to the Planetary Data System (PDS) the first six months of data acquired by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) spacecraft. The PDS serves as NASA's permanent online data archive providing these measurements to the science community and the world at large. This release includes data acquired between June 2009 and December 2009 by the suite of science instruments on the lunar orbiter, including the imaging system run by the ASU-based team under professor Mark Robinson.
