Cassini Heading To Titan After Tagging Enceladus
Pasadena CA (JPL) May 21, 2010
NASA's Cassini spacecraft is on its way to a flyby of Saturn's largest moon, Titan, after capturing some stunning images of Enceladus. One view shows the hazy outline of Titan behind Saturn's rings, with the dark curve of Enceladus at the bottom. In other images, Enceladus put its craggy face forward, exhibiting some of the fractures and cratering that have made the Saturnian moon a favorite of both planetary scientists and outer-planet mission groupies. A view of Enceladus' terminator was taken b ... read more

Seed Bank For The Moon
Sydney, Australia (SPX) Apr 20, 2010
In 2009, it was found that some polar regions of the Moon are the coldest places in the solar system. It's even colder there than distant, frozen Pluto! Some craters are permanently blocked from sunlight, and apparently lack sources of heat from underground. These areas aren't just cold at certain times. They never get warm at all. The Moon's cold traps have been celebrated for another rea ... more

Craters Around Lunar Poles Could Be Electrified
Greenbelt MD (SPX) Apr 19, 2010
As the solar wind flows over natural obstructions on the moon, it may charge polar lunar craters to hundreds of volts, according to new calculations by NASA's Lunar Science Institute team. Polar lunar craters are of interest because of resources, including water ice, which exist there. The moon's orientation to the sun keeps the bottoms of polar craters in permanent shadow, allowing temper ... more

Obama Mars Plan Draws Criticism
Moscow (RIA Novosti) Apr 19, 2010
On April 15, U.S. President Barack Obama delivered an address on space policy at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. After successfully overhauling the U.S. healthcare system, Obama now wants to overhaul the U.S. space program, directing it away from more moon missions toward a mission to Mars. Obama's vision for the future of the U.S. space program has created a deep rift in the space co ... more

Enceladus Leaves Plasma Bubbles In Its Wake
Glasgow UK (SPX) Apr 15, 2010
Observations of how Saturn's moon Enceladus interacts with its environment show it leaves a complex pattern of ripples and bubbles in its wake. Sheila Kanani presented these results at the RAS National Astronomy Meeting in Glasgow. Enceladus sits deep within Saturn's magnetosphere, which is filled with electrically charged particles (plasma) originating from both the planet and its moons. The Cassini spacecraft has made nine flybys of the mysterious sixth-largest moon since 2005. The closest ... read more
