Caltech Team Finds Evidence Of Water In Moon Minerals
Pasadena CA (SPX) Jul 23, 2010
That dry, dusty moon overhead? Seems it isn't quite as dry as it's long been thought to be. Although you won't find oceans, lakes, or even a shallow puddle on its surface, a team of geologists at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), working with colleagues at the University of Tennessee, has found structurally bound hydroxyl groups (i.e., water) in a mineral in a lunar rock returned to Earth by the Apollo program. Their findings are detailed in this week's issue of the journal Nature. ... read more

Grappling With Space Jobs
Bethesda MD (SPX) Jun 29, 2010
Senator Jeff Sessions, last week , said Senators whose states will lose private sector jobs related to new NASA's space plans would like an independent legal opinion on whether or not NASA can order the winding down of the Constellation program. Senator Sessions and others seem to think "this is clearly a violation of the congressional intent." President Obama has instructed NASA to redire ... more

The Earth From The Moon
Tempe AZ (SPX) Jun 25, 2010
All cameras are susceptible to scattered light. You may have seen scattered light in pictures you have taken looking towards the Sun. Sunlight reflects off the optics and sometimes off the structure of the lens, and often appears as a gradient of brightness across the image. Attaching a baffle to your camera, like we did with the LROC Wide and Narrow Angle Cameras, can minimize this effect. ... more

Hunting For Fossils On Europa
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Jun 21, 2010
If extraterrestrial life exists on Jupiter's moon Europa, instead of deploying probes to drill past its ice shell to look for aliens in the ocean below, one might just go fossil-hunting on the icy surface. "A prospector sent there could possibly find extraterrestrial life within our lifetimes," suggested planetary scientist Richard Greenberg at the University of Arizona's Lunar and Planeta ... more

Chance For Life On Io
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Jun 11, 2010
When it comes to where extraterrestrial life might dwell in our own solar system, Jupiter's moon Europa often grabs the spotlight. However, its extraordinarily volcanic sibling Io might be a possible habitat as well. A bit larger than Earth's moon, Io is the innermost of Jupiter's large satellites and the most volcanically active body in the solar system, with plumes of matter rising up to 186 miles (300 km) above the surface. This extreme activity is the result of Jupiter's powerful gravita ... read more
