The Moon Puts On Camo
Greenbelt MD (SPX) Aug 31, 2010
A new geologic map of the moon's Schrodinger basin paints an instant, camouflage-colored portrait of what a mash-up the moon's surface is after eons of violent events. The geologic record at Schrodinger is still relatively fresh because the basin is only about 3.8 billion years old; this makes it the moon's second-youngest large basin (it's roughly 320 kilometers, or 200 miles, in diameter). Schrodinger is located near the moon's south pole, a region where pockets of permanent ice are thought to e ... read more

Mimicking The Moon's Surface In The Basement
Los Alamos NM (SPX) Aug 09, 2010
A team of scientists used an ion beam in a basement room at Los Alamos National Laboratory to simulate solar winds on the surface of the Moon. The table-top simulation helped confirm that the Moon is inherently dry. In research published in Science Express, Zachary Sharp of the University of New Mexico and a team of scientists from California, Texas and New Mexico-including Yongqiang Wang, ... more

NASA's ATHLETE Warms Up For High Desert Run
Pasadena CA (JPL) Aug 02, 2010
Pasadena CA (JPL) Aug 02, 2010 Engineers from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory are currently putting their All-Terrain, Hex-Limbed, Extra-Terrestrial Explorer (ATHLETE) through a series of long-drive tests on the long, dirt roads found adjacent to JPL. The JPL grounds do not include an unpaved area of sufficient size for testing such a large robot over a long distance. Some of the dirt roads in the Arroyo Seco (a wash located next to JPL) are wide enough for ATHLETE, and its close proximity ... read more
