Earth To Have Closest Encounter With Jupiter Until 2022
Huntsville AL (SPX) Sep 21, 2010
Been outside at midnight lately? There's something you really need to see. Jupiter is approaching Earth for the closest encounter between the two planets in more than a decade--and it is dazzling. The night of closest approach is Sept. 20-21st. This is also called "the night of opposition" because Jupiter will be opposite the sun, rising at sunset and soaring overhead at midnight. Chandrayaan-2 Will Try Out New Ideas And Technologies
Bangalore, India (SPX) Sep 08, 2010
Chandrayaan-2, the proposed second Indian mission to moon, would undertake "extremely good" experiments and try out new technologies but accommodating foreign payloads on board does not appear to be a possibility at this stage. The first edition of the moon odyssey had six foreign payloads and five Indian ones on board but heavy orbiter (satellite) and lander weight this time has put const ... more

Can We Spot Volcanoes On Alien Worlds
Cambridge MA (SPX) Sep 08, 2010
Volcanoes display the awesome power of Nature like few other events. Earlier this year, ash from an Icelandic volcano disrupted air travel throughout much of northern Europe. Yet this recent eruption pales next to the fury of Jupiter's moon Io, the most volcanic body in our solar system. Now that astronomers are finding rocky worlds orbiting distant stars, they're asking the next logical q ... more

Picture-Perfect Pluto Practice
Laurel MD (SPX) Sep 06, 2010
Neptune's giant moon Triton is often called Pluto's "twin" - so what better practice target, then, for New Horizons' telescopic camera? New Horizons' Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) snapped several photos of Neptune during the latest annual systems checkout, which ended July 30. Neptune was 23.2 astronomical units (about 2.15 billion miles!) from New Horizons when LORRI took aim a ... more

China Publishes Official Chinese Names For Places On The Moon
Beijing, China (XNA) Sep 03, 2010
China's Ministry of Civil Affairs has published the official Chinese names for places on the earth's moon, in a first that eliminates confusion and will help the nation's lunar exploration efforts. The ministry published the Chinese names for 468 places and will publish more at a later date. The International Astronomical Union has given names to more than 9,000 places on the moon, said a ministry official Thursday. The project to standardize Chinese lunar names was initiated by the mi ... read more
