Dead Spacecraft Walking
Huntsville AL (SPX) Oct 29, 2010
A pair of NASA spacecraft that were supposed to be dead last year are instead flying to the Moon for a breakthrough mission in lunar orbit. "Their real names are THEMIS P1 and P2, but I call them 'dead spacecraft walking,'" says Vassilis Angelopoulos of UCLA, principal investigator of the THEMIS mission. "Not long ago they appeared to be doomed, but now they are beginning an incredible new adventure." The story begins in 2007 when NASA launched a fleet of five spacecraft into Earth's magneto ... read more

Saturn's Icy Moon May Keep Oceans Liquid With Wobble
Pasadena CA (JPL) Oct 07, 2010
Saturn's icy moon Enceladus should not be one of the most promising places in our solar system to look for extraterrestrial life. Instead, it should have frozen solid billions of years ago. Located in the frigid outer solar system, it's too far from the sun to have oceans of liquid water - a necessary ingredient for known forms of life - on its surface. Some worlds, like Mars or Jupiter's ... more

Chang'e-2 Heads For Moon
Beijing, China (XNA) Oct 04, 2010
China's second unmanned lunar probe, Chang'e-2, was maneuvered to correct its trajectory on the earth-moon transfer orbit Saturday. Scientists successfully activated the attitude control engines on Chang'e-2 and trimmed the satellite for the first time on its journey, according to a flight control official in Beijing. "During Chang'e-2's 380,000-km journey to the moon, we will conduct more orbit corrections if necessary to ensure that it enters a lunar orbit," said Ma Yongping, vice director ... read more
