Blue Origin teams with Luxembourg on Oasis 1 lunar resource mapping mission

Blue Origin has announced Project Oasis, a multi-phase campaign to identify and utilize lunar resources. The first mission, Oasis-1, will work with Luxembourg partners to produce the most detailed orbital maps yet of water ice, Helium-3, radionuclides, rare earth elements, and precious metals across the lunar surface.

Oasis-1 will use neutron spectroscopy at ultra-low orbital altitudes to quantify water ice concentrations to one meter depth, alongside magnetometers for metal detection and multispectral imaging for geological mapping. Controlled impact sequences will maximize data return and guide the selection of extraction sites.

Accessing water ice on the Moon could enable hydrogen and oxygen propellant production, turning the lunar surface into an off-world refueling hub. These resources could also support lunar power, in-space manufacturing, and clean energy systems, while reducing dependence on terrestrial extraction.

"Once we know what's really there and how to access it, everything changes," said Pat Remias, vice president, Advanced Concepts and Enterprise Engineering. "Project Oasis creates the foundation for a thriving space economy that benefits everyone, including the billions of individuals on Earth who will benefit from space-based resources."

The initiative will be supported by Blue Alchemist technology, which processes lunar regolith into oxygen, solar cells, and power cables. Together, these efforts are designed to make large-scale space infrastructure viable and cost-effective while supporting future missions to Mars and asteroid resource utilization.

Project Oasis is being developed through Blue Origin's Space Resources Center of Excellence and its Luxembourg office, with support from Luxembourg's space agency, GOMSpace, and ESRIC. The effort seeks to reduce deep-space mission costs by up to 90 percent, enable permanent lunar bases, and promote international collaboration in resource development.
