LRO Camera Releases Science Data From First Six Months
Tempe AZ (SPX) Mar 18, 2010
NASA is releasing to the Planetary Data System (PDS) the first six months of data acquired by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) spacecraft. The PDS serves as NASA's permanent online data archive providing these measurements to the science community and the world at large. This release includes data acquired between June 2009 and December 2009 by the suite of science instruments on the lunar orbiter, including the imaging system run by the ASU-based team under professor Mark Robinson. Lava Likely Made River-Like Channel On Mars
Greenbelt MD (SPX) Mar 08, 2010
Flowing lava can carve or build paths very much like the riverbeds and canyons etched by water, and this probably explains at least one of the meandering channels on the surface of Mars. These results were presented on March 4, 2010 at the 41st Lunar and Planetary Science Conference by Jacob Bleacher at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md. Whether channels on Mars were formed ... more

Biggest, Deepest Crater Exposes Hidden, Ancient Moon
Pasadena CA (SPX) Mar 08, 2010
Shortly after the Moon formed, an asteroid smacked into its southern hemisphere and gouged out a truly enormous crater, the South Pole-Aitken basin, almost 1,500 miles across and more than five miles deep. "This is the biggest, deepest crater on the Moon - an abyss that could engulf the United States from the East Coast through Texas," said Noah Petro of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center ... more

Is That Titan Or Utah
Pasadena CA (JPL) Mar 08, 2010
Planetary scientists have been puzzling for years over the honeycomb patterns and flat valleys with squiggly edges evident in radar images of Saturn's moon Titan. Now, working with a "volunteer researcher" who has put his own spin on data from NASA's Cassini spacecraft, they have found some recognizable analogies to a type of spectacular terrain on Earth known as karst topography. At a poster se ... more

An Avatar Twist On Flora Based Life
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Mar 05, 2010
The film "Avatar" takes viewers to a fictional moon, where the plants glow, shoot poison leaf tips and communicate. None of this fits exactly with our definition of "plant," but one botanist has pieced together an ecological back-story for how plants may have evolved on this strange world. The moon Pandora is depicted as a lush rainforest that may remind some of Hawaii or Borneo. But the Earthlings who venture onto this exomoon are confronted with plants (not to mention animals) that behave in sur ... read more
