ESA plans its first moon landerParis (UPI) Apr 1, 2010 The European Space Agency says it is seeking industry proposals for a lander to be used in an exploration mission to the moon's south polar region. ESA scientists said that lunar area's possible deposits of water ice, heavily cratered terrain and long periods of sunlight make it an extremely interesting target for astronauts' moon missions. The space agency says the lander will need the latest navigation technology to fly a precise course from lunar orbit to the surface and touch down sa ... read more |

Cassini Cruises By Rhea And Helene
Pasadena CA (JPL) Mar 15, 2010Cassini's closest-ever flyby of Saturn's moon Rhea went quite smoothly and teams are busy checking out their data! These flybys never fail to amaze me. And the raw images - which give us an unprocessed first look - are really cool! Raw image N00152150 gives us a view of part of the bright, fractured terrain we refer to as "wispy terrain" from about 14,000 kilometers (8,900 miles) away. We ... more Cassini Data Show Ice And Rock Mixture Inside Titan
Pasadena CA (JPL) Mar 12, 2010By precisely tracking NASA's Cassini spacecraft on its low swoops over Saturn's moon Titan, scientists have determined the distribution of materials in the moon's interior. The subtle gravitational tugs they measured suggest the interior has been too cold and sluggish to split completely into separate layers of ice and rock. The finding, to be published in the March 12 issue of the journal ... more Astronauts decry Obama moon decision
London (UPI) Mar 13, 2009 Former NASA astronauts who have been on moon missions told the BBC they are unhappy with U.S. President Barack Obama's decision to delay future such missions. Obama last month canceled NASA's Constellation Moon landings program, approved by former President George W. Bush. The space agency still plans to send astronauts to the moon, but the BBC said it would likely take decades or never ... more |

NASA Launches Interactive Simulation Of Satellite CommunicationsMoffett Field CA (SPX) Mar 10, 2010 NASA has unveiled an interactive computer simulation that allows virtual explorers of all ages to dock the space shuttle at the International Space Station, experience a virtual trip to Mars or a lunar impact, and explore images of star formations taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. In an effort to excite young people about space and NASA's missions, the agency has launched the online Space Communication and Navigation (SCaN) simulation, designed to entertain and educate. The interactive simulati ... read more |
