Seed Bank For The MoonSydney, Australia (SPX) Apr 20, 2010 In 2009, it was found that some polar regions of the Moon are the coldest places in the solar system. It's even colder there than distant, frozen Pluto! Some craters are permanently blocked from sunlight, and apparently lack sources of heat from underground. These areas aren't just cold at certain times. They never get warm at all. The Moon's cold traps have been celebrated for another reason. They apparently hold large quantities of water ice, which could be highly useful to astronauts in the fut ... read more |

Teal Worldwide Mission Model Estimates 2,229 Space Payloads
Washington DC (SPX) Mar 31, 2010Teal Group has announced it has revised upward its Worldwide Mission Model of future space payloads. According to the Teal survey, there are 2,229 space payloads proposed for launch to earth or lunar orbits or deep space trajectories from 2010-2029. "Our payload count for the next 20 years is nearly 10 percent higher than it was a year ago," said Marco Caceres, lead analyst for Teal Group' ... more Color Near Herschel Crater
Pasadena CA (JPL) Mar 30, 2010Subtle color differences on Saturn's moon Mimas are apparent in this false-color view of Herschel Crater captured by NASA's Cassini spacecraft during its closest-ever flyby of that moon. The image shows terrain-dependent color variations, particularly the contrast between the bluish materials in and around Herschel Crater (130 kilometers, or 80 miles, wide) and the greenish cast on older, ... more 1980s Video Icon Glows On Saturn Moon
Pasadena CA (JPL) Mar 30, 2010The highest-resolution-yet temperature map and images of Saturn's icy moon Mimas obtained by NASA's Cassini spacecraft reveal surprising patterns on the surface of the small moon, including unexpected hot regions that resemble "Pac-Man" eating a dot, and striking bands of light and dark in crater walls. "Other moons usually grab the spotlight, but it turns out Mimas is more bizarre than we ... more |

The Mystery Of MoonwaterHuntsville AL (SPX) Mar 19, 2010 Moonwater. Look it up. You won't find it. It's not in the dictionary. That's because we thought, until recently, that the Moon was just about the driest place in the solar system. Then reports of moonwater started "pouring" in - starting with estimates of scant amounts on the lunar surface, then gallons in a single crater, and now 600 million metric tons distributed among 40 craters near the lunar north pole. "We thought we understood the Moon, but we don't," says Paul Spudis of the Lunar and Plan ... read more |
