NASA Moves 'FAST' For Reduced-Gravity Flight Testing Tech ProjectsWashington DC (SPX) May 24, 2010 NASA selected 17 technology demonstration projects for reduced-gravity aircraft flights to demonstrate whether emerging technologies can perform as expected in the reduced-gravity environment of the moon and Mars, or the zero-gravity environment of Earth orbit. NASA selected the projects through its Facilitated Access to the Space Environment for Technology program, or FAST. The selected projects are from U.S. companies, universities and NASA laboratories from 10 different states. NASA will begin ... read more |

Apollo 13 - NASA's Successful Failure
Schriever AFB CO (SPX) Apr 21, 2010April marks the 40th Anniversary of the failed Apollo 13 mission and the near loss of its astronauts, James Lovell, John "Jack" Swigert, and Fred Haise. Apollo 13 was NASA's third moon shot, following the Apollo 11 lunar landing on July 20, 1969, which was repeated by Apollo 12 on Nov. 19, 1969. The mission, however, was plagued by challenges. Three days before the April 11, 1970 launch, c ... more From The Streets Of New York To The Moon
Houston TX (SPX) Apr 21, 2010If you mention the name Neil Armstrong to the average American, you'll find immediate recognition. "He was the first man on the moon," they'll say. But if you ask the average American about the team behind Armstrong, you're likely to get blank stares, which is why one Apollo technician has written a new memoir. "It's important that people know about some of the 400,000 people who contribut ... more Seed Bank For The Moon
Sydney, Australia (SPX) Apr 20, 2010In 2009, it was found that some polar regions of the Moon are the coldest places in the solar system. It's even colder there than distant, frozen Pluto! Some craters are permanently blocked from sunlight, and apparently lack sources of heat from underground. These areas aren't just cold at certain times. They never get warm at all. The Moon's cold traps have been celebrated for another rea ... more |

Dual Drill Designed For Europa Ice MissionMoffett Field CA (SPX) Apr 16, 2010 A mole-like thermal drill designed to cut through the icy surface of Jupiter's moon Europa could be on a future mission slated for launch in 2020. Such a device would represent the best of both worlds by using heat to melt through the ice and rotating drill blades to clear away rocky material. The drill would be nestled inside a larger penetrator probe that would burrow itself into Europa's icy shell. "Penetrators are the most feasible, cheapest and safest option for a landing on Europa today, and ... read more |
