Cassini Helps With Dune Whodunit
Pasadena CA (SPX) Jul 30, 2010
The answer to the mystery of dune patterns on Saturn's moon Titan did turn out to be blowing in the wind. It just wasn't from the direction many scientists expected. Basic principles describing the rotation of planetary atmospheres and data from the European Space Agency's Huygens probe led to circulation models that showed surface winds streaming generally east-to-west around Titan's equatorial belt. But when NASA's Cassini spacecraft obtained the first images of dunes on Titan in 2005, the ... read more

Saturn System Moves Oxygen From Enceladus To Titan
Washington DC (SPX) Jul 05, 2010
Complex interactions between Saturn and its satellites have led scientists using NASA's Cassini spacecraft to a comprehensive model that could explain how oxygen may end up on the surface of Saturn's icy moon Titan. The presence of these oxygen atoms could potentially provide the basis for pre-biological chemistry. The interactions are captured in two papers, one led by John Cooper and ano ... more

Man In The Moon Has 'Graphite Whiskers'
Pasadena CA (JPL) Jul 02, 2010
In a new analysis of a lunar sample collected by Apollo 17, researchers have detected and dated carbon on the moon in the form of graphite - the sooty stuff of pencil lead - which survived from around 3.8 billion years ago, when the moon was heavily bombarded by meteorites. Up to now, scientists thought the trace amounts of carbon previously detected on the surface of the moon came from th ... more

Grappling With Space Jobs
Bethesda MD (SPX) Jun 29, 2010
Senator Jeff Sessions, last week , said Senators whose states will lose private sector jobs related to new NASA's space plans would like an independent legal opinion on whether or not NASA can order the winding down of the Constellation program. Senator Sessions and others seem to think "this is clearly a violation of the congressional intent." President Obama has instructed NASA to redirect its mission away from the moon and toward deep space exploration. Among other effects, cancellation of Cons ... read more
