Russia To Launch Moon Probe In 2012
Razvilka, Russia (RIA Novosti) Aug 05, 2010
Russia's Federal Space Agency Roscosmos will launch a probe bearing a neutron generator to study the moon's surface in 2012, a leading space researcher said on Tuesday. "Roscosmos plans to send to the moon a spacecraft bearing a neutron generator developed by our institute to study lunar surface," said Yevgeny Bogolyubov, deputy chief designer of the Automation Engineering Scientific Research Institute. He also said the generator would be used to study the surface of Mars. "The IGN-10K ... read more

Science Team To Study Data From China's First Lunar Probe
Beijing, China (XNA) Jul 19, 2010
China's space agency has set up a committee of 123 leading scientists to consider how the country might apply the vast amount of data acquired by China's first lunar probe. The project had resulted in data about the distribution and content of important elements on the moon, such as uranium, thorium, potassium, aluminum, silicon, iron and titanium, said the State Administration of Science, ... more

See Beautiful Ontario Lacus: Cassini's Guided Tour
Pasadena CA (SPX) Jul 16, 2010
Ontario Lacus, the largest lake in the southern hemisphere of Saturn's moon Titan, turns out to be a perfect exotic vacation spot, provided you can handle the frosty, subzero temperatures and enjoy soaking in liquid hydrocarbon. Several recent papers by scientists working with NASA's Cassini spacecraft describe evidence of beaches for sunbathing in Titan's low light, sheltered bays for moo ... more

Apollo 16: Footsteps Under High Sun
Washington DC (SPX) Jul 09, 2010
The lunar module Orion landed in the Descartes Highlands of the moon on April 21, 1972. The Apollo 16 mission targeted a highland region. Originally thought to be a volcanic site, the samples returned by Apollo 16 actually indicated that the highlands of the moon primarily consist of impact-formed rocks (breccias), a substantial scientific result. Man In The Moon Has 'Graphite Whiskers'
Pasadena CA (JPL) Jul 02, 2010
In a new analysis of a lunar sample collected by Apollo 17, researchers have detected and dated carbon on the moon in the form of graphite - the sooty stuff of pencil lead - which survived from around 3.8 billion years ago, when the moon was heavily bombarded by meteorites. Up to now, scientists thought the trace amounts of carbon previously detected on the surface of the moon came from the solar wind. Some of the graphite revealed by the new study appeared in a rare rolled form known as "gr ... read more
