China preps next lunar space mission
Beijing (AFP) Sept 10, 2010
China is on track to launch its second lunar satellite by year's end, as the country pursues its plans for a manned mission to the moon by 2020, state media said Friday. Preparations for the launch of the Chang'e-2 probe, which will go into orbit within 15 kilometres (nine miles) of the moon, are going smoothly, People's Daily said, citing Wu Weiren, a senior engineer overseeing the programme. The Chang'e-2 mission "is currently undergoing pre-launch testing and preparations - the plan is to ca ... read more

LRO Reveals Incredible Shrinking Moon
Washington DC (SPX) Aug 20, 2010
Newly discovered cliffs in the lunar crust indicate the moon shrank globally in the geologically recent past and might still be shrinking today, according to a team analyzing new images from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) spacecraft. The results provide important clues to the moon's recent geologic and tectonic evolution. The moon formed in a chaotic environment of intense bomba ... more

A Hop, Skip And A Jump On The Moon - And Beyond
Boston MA (SPX) Aug 19, 2010
Although unmanned, wheeled rovers have explored the surfaces of the moon and Mars for decades, these vehicles have limits - they can't crawl inside craters, scale cliffs or travel long distances. For more than two years, a team of students led by Professor of the Practice of Astronautics and former NASA astronaut Jeffrey Hoffman in MIT's Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics has been ... more

Move Over Caravaggio: Cassini's Light And Dark Moons
Pasadena CA (JPL) Aug 19, 2010
NASA's Cassini spacecraft has returned Saturnian moon images from its flyby late last week, revealing light and dark contrasts worthy of chiaroscuro painters like Caravaggio. The flyby on August 13 targeted the geyser moon Enceladus, but also brought Cassini close to two other moons--Tethys and Dione. The raw images include the best ones to date of Penelope crater on the icy moon Tet ... more

Where In The World Is Europa
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Aug 17, 2010
Instead of flying to Europa without first testing what a mission there might experience, now a number of sites on Earth - and beyond - that mimic the Jovian moon are being uncovered that could help explorers conduct trial runs. Missions to Mars such as the Mars Exploration Rovers were exhaustively field-tested in "Mars Yards" - areas whose terrain mimicked the red planet. In much the same way, researchers would like to rehearse missions to explore Europa using analogs of that moon on Earth. ... read more
