Into A Volcano To Test Suitcase-Sized Science Lab
Baltimore MD (SPX) Feb 25, 2010
Some scientists will go anywhere for a proper test, including the mouth of a (sleeping) Hawaiian volcano. Dr. Inge Ten Kate, a University of Maryland Baltimore County research assistant, led an expedition into a cinder cone atop Mauna Kea, Hawaii, to test the prototype for an instrument that will be a miniature laboratory to discover the composition of rocks and atmospheres on moons, asteroids, and planets across the solar system. The instrument is being built at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center ... read more

The Active Moons Of Saturn
Washington DC (SPX) Feb 15, 2010
Like midnight taggers, Saturn's moons Dione, Tethys, Mimas and Rhea may be spraying their unique signatures all over Saturn's environment when no one's looking. Or maybe not; they've never been caught in the act, unlike their sibling moon Enceladus, which has been repeatedly observed shooting a dramatic plume of ice vapor high above its surface. Other than Enceladus, there are just a few a ... more

Moon Exploration is Not Dead
Sydney, Australia (SPX) Feb 02, 2010

The Constellation program, originally created to land astronauts there by 2020, is no more. But that doesn't mean that astronauts will not return in the future, nor does it mean that lunar exploration will cease in the meantime. NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbite ... more

Washington (AFP) Jan 29, 2010
President Barack Obama's 2011 budget, to be submitted to Congress Monday, will propose abandoning a program to return US astronauts to the Moon, two Florida newspapers said Thursday. Citing administration and NASA officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity, the reports said the White House would call on the US space agency to focus on other programs, including the development of commercial services to ferry US astronauts to the International Space Station. Florida Today and the Orlando Se ... read more
