Triton's Summer Sky Of Methane And Carbon Monoxide
Paris, France (SPX) Apr 08, 2010
According to the first ever infrared analysis of the atmosphere of Neptune's moon Triton, summer is in full swing in its southern hemisphere. The European observing team used ESO's Very Large Telescope and discovered carbon monoxide and made the first ground-based detection of methane in Triton's thin atmosphere. These observations revealed that the thin atmosphere varies seasonally, thickening when warmed. "We have found real evidence that the Sun still makes its presence felt on Triton, ev ... read more

Avatars In Space
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Mar 16, 2010

Cassini Cruises By Rhea And Helene
Pasadena CA (JPL) Mar 15, 2010
Cassini's closest-ever flyby of Saturn's moon Rhea went quite smoothly and teams are busy checking out their data! These flybys never fail to amaze me. And the raw images - which give us an unprocessed first look - are really cool! Raw image N00152150 gives us a view of part of the bright, fractured terrain we refer to as "wispy terrain" from about 14,000 kilometers (8,900 miles) away. We ... more

Cassini Data Show Ice And Rock Mixture Inside Titan
Pasadena CA (JPL) Mar 12, 2010
By precisely tracking NASA's Cassini spacecraft on its low swoops over Saturn's moon Titan, scientists have determined the distribution of materials in the moon's interior. The subtle gravitational tugs they measured suggest the interior has been too cold and sluggish to split completely into separate layers of ice and rock. The finding, to be published in the March 12 issue of the journal ... more
