Counting The Craters Of TitanMoffett Field CA (SPX) Apr 23, 2010 A new study in the journal Icarus provides the latest round-up of the number of impact craters found on Saturn's moon Titan. Between 2004 and December 2007, Cassini had surveyed 22 percent of Titan's surface. Scientists analyzed images taken by the spacecraft's high-resolution Radar Mapper instrument, and found 49 impact craters. "Impact craters are created on every planet because of asteroids, comets and other debris that collide with their surfaces," said Charles Wood, senior scientist at ... read more |

Triton's Summer Sky Of Methane And Carbon Monoxide
Paris, France (SPX) Apr 08, 2010According to the first ever infrared analysis of the atmosphere of Neptune's moon Triton, summer is in full swing in its southern hemisphere. The European observing team used ESO's Very Large Telescope and discovered carbon monoxide and made the first ground-based detection of methane in Triton's thin atmosphere. These observations revealed that the thin atmosphere varies seasonally, thick ... more ESA plans its first moon lander
Paris (UPI) Apr 1, 2010The European Space Agency says it is seeking industry proposals for a lander to be used in an exploration mission to the moon's south polar region. ESA scientists said that lunar area's possible deposits of water ice, heavily cratered terrain and long periods of sunlight make it an extremely interesting target for astronauts' moon missions. The space agency says the lander will n ... more A Precise Voyage To The Lunar South Pole
Paris, France (ESA) Apr 01, 2010The south polar region of the Moon, with dark craters and high ridges, is a world away from the relatively smooth terrain visited by Apollo astronauts four decades ago. This rugged moonscape is the target for Europe's next leap into space. The possible deposits of water ice, heavily cratered terrain and long periods of sunlight make the lunar south pole and areas around it extremely intere ... more |

1980s Video Icon Glows On Saturn MoonPasadena CA (JPL) Mar 30, 2010 The highest-resolution-yet temperature map and images of Saturn's icy moon Mimas obtained by NASA's Cassini spacecraft reveal surprising patterns on the surface of the small moon, including unexpected hot regions that resemble "Pac-Man" eating a dot, and striking bands of light and dark in crater walls. "Other moons usually grab the spotlight, but it turns out Mimas is more bizarre than we thought it was," said Linda Spilker, Cassini project scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasaden ... read more |
