WISE Has A Heart And Soul
Pasadena CA (JPL) May 25, 2010
The Heart and Soul nebulae are seen in this infrared mosaic from NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, or WISE. The image covers an area of the sky over ten times as wide as the full moon and eight times as high (5.5 x 3.9 degrees) in the constellation Cassiopeia. Located about 6,000 light-years from Earth, the Heart and Soul nebulae form a vast star-forming complex that makes up part of the Perseus spiral arm of our Milky Way galaxy. The nebula to the left is the Heart, designated IC 1805 a ... read more

Counting The Craters Of Titan
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Apr 23, 2010
A new study in the journal Icarus provides the latest round-up of the number of impact craters found on Saturn's moon Titan. Between 2004 and December 2007, Cassini had surveyed 22 percent of Titan's surface. Scientists analyzed images taken by the spacecraft's high-resolution Radar Mapper instrument, and found 49 impact craters. "Impact craters are created on every planet because of ... more

Apollo 13 - NASA's Successful Failure
Schriever AFB CO (SPX) Apr 21, 2010
April marks the 40th Anniversary of the failed Apollo 13 mission and the near loss of its astronauts, James Lovell, John "Jack" Swigert, and Fred Haise. Apollo 13 was NASA's third moon shot, following the Apollo 11 lunar landing on July 20, 1969, which was repeated by Apollo 12 on Nov. 19, 1969. The mission, however, was plagued by challenges. Three days before the April 11, 1970 launch, c ... more

If you mention the name Neil Armstrong to the average American, you'll find immediate recognition. "He was the first man on the moon," they'll say. But if you ask the average American about the team behind Armstrong, you're likely to get blank stares, which is why one Apollo technician has written a new memoir. "It's important that people know about some of the 400,000 people who contribut ... more

Obama Mars Plan Draws Criticism
Moscow (RIA Novosti) Apr 19, 2010
On April 15, U.S. President Barack Obama delivered an address on space policy at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. After successfully overhauling the U.S. healthcare system, Obama now wants to overhaul the U.S. space program, directing it away from more moon missions toward a mission to Mars. Obama's vision for the future of the U.S. space program has created a deep rift in the space community. Advocates of new moon missions claim that Obama is essentially ceding space to Russia, China and even ... read more
