Magnetic Anomalies Shield The MoonRome, Italy (SPX) Sep 27, 2010 Scientists have discovered a new type of solar wind interaction with airless bodies in our solar system. Magnetized regions called magnetic anomalies, mostly on the far side of the Moon, were found to strongly deflect the solar wind, shielding the Moon's surface. This will help understand the solar wind behavior near the lunar surface and how water may be generated in its upper layer. Observational evidence for these findings will be presented by Dr. Yoshifumi Futaana and Dr. Martin Wieser at the ... read more |

NASA's Lunar Spacecraft Completes Exploration Mission Phase
Washington DC (SPX) Sep 16, 2010NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, or LRO, will complete the exploration phase of its mission on Sept. 16, after a number of successes that transformed our understanding of Earth's nearest neighbor. LRO completed a one-year exploration mission in a polar orbit approximately 31 miles above the moon's surface. It produced a comprehensive map of the lunar surface in unprecedented detail; se ... more ARTEMIS - The First Earth-Moon Libration Orbiter
Greenbelt MD (SPX) Sep 16, 2010In August 1960, NASA launched its first communications satellite, Echo 1. Fifty years later, NASA has achieved another first by placing the ARTEMIS-P1 spacecraft into a unique orbit behind the moon, but not actually orbiting the moon itself. This type of orbit, called an Earth-Moon libration orbit, relies on a precise balancing of the Sun, Earth, and Moon gravity so that a spacecraft can o ... more Don't Forget Deimos
Sydney, Australia (SPX) Sep 13, 2010Next year, Russia plans to launch a mission to Phobos, the largest moon of Mars. This spacecraft, called Phobos-Grunt, will be the first spacecraft to land on this moon, and also the first mission to return samples of Phobos to Earth. Phobos is an interesting object, and it's been studied a lot by orbiting spacecraft. The moon is in a fairly low orbit around Mars, which makes it easy to se ... more |

Chandrayaan-2 Will Try Out New Ideas And TechnologiesBangalore, India (SPX) Sep 08, 2010 Chandrayaan-2, the proposed second Indian mission to moon, would undertake "extremely good" experiments and try out new technologies but accommodating foreign payloads on board does not appear to be a possibility at this stage. The first edition of the moon odyssey had six foreign payloads and five Indian ones on board but heavy orbiter (satellite) and lander weight this time has put constraints on the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in terms of carry-load of instruments.
